- Agent licence and code of conduct
- Agents are appointed by an insurer under IRDAI rules. The long-standing code of conduct expects an agent to identify themself and the insurer they represent, and to show their licence to a prospect on demand.
- POSP (Point of Sales Person)
- A simpler role for selling pre-underwritten products approved for POSP sale, such as many motor, personal accident and travel covers and some simple life and health plans. The life master circular requires the person to be at least 18, 10th pass, and to complete 15 hours of training and an exam.
- Corporate agents, IMFs and brokers
- Corporate agents were reported in March 2024 as allowed to tie up with up to nine insurers in each of life, general and health, and insurance marketing firms with up to six. Brokers work under the 2018 broker regulations and act for the client, not the insurer.
- Advertising under the June 2024 master circular
- The 2021 advertisement regulations were replaced in 2024. Insurers and distribution channels must have advertisements approved internally, follow the ASCI code, and must not advertise unit-linked products as investment products. Insurers usually want agents to use only their approved material.
- Free-look period
- A new policyholder can return a life or health policy within the free-look period, reported as 30 days from receipt of the policy document under the 2024 rules. Some deductions are allowed, as the policy terms explain.
- Grace period
- For health policies, the 2024 master circular is reported to set 15 days for monthly premiums and 30 days for other modes, with cover continuing during the grace period. Life policies have grace periods in their own terms.
- Commission and expenses of management
- Since April 2023, each insurer pays commission under its own board-approved policy, within overall expenses of management limits (now in the 2024 regulations). There is no single rate table for all insurers.
- GST on premiums
- From 22 September 2025, individual life and individual health premiums are exempt from GST. Group policies and general insurance such as motor are still taxed. Insurers can no longer claim input credit on commission for exempt policies.
- 1600-series numbers and DND
- TRAI directed insurers and insurance intermediaries to make service and transactional calls only from 1600-series numbers from 15 February 2026 (IRDAI circular of 6 January 2026). Promotional calls and SMS follow TRAI’s commercial communication rules, including DND preferences and registered templates.
- Client data under the DPDP Act 2023
- Names, phone numbers, health details, vehicle numbers and nominee details are personal data, and health details are sensitive in practice. The agent or agency must collect them for a clear purpose with consent.
