What a fashion brand needs to sell online in India

Selling clothes online in India is not hard to start. Anyone can open an Instagram page and take orders on WhatsApp. It gets hard when orders grow: the wrong size goes out, a COD parcel comes back after three delivery attempts and you pay shipping both ways, the same kurta is sold twice because the shop sold the last piece an hour ago, and your margin disappears into returns and marketplace fees.

This page is for clothing brands, ethnic and western wear labels, boutiques and designers, saree and fabric stores, kids wear makers, and multi-store retailers. Some of you sell on Myntra, Ajio or Amazon and want a D2C store where you keep the margin and the customer data. Some of you run a boutique in Vashi or Bandra and want online orders without losing control of stock.

Infoways builds fashion ecommerce stores, shopping apps and the admin software behind them from Mahape, Navi Mumbai. We work on Shopify, WooCommerce and custom builds, and we choose based on your catalogue size, your stores and your budget, not on what is easiest for us.

The aim is simple: fewer returns, fewer RTO parcels, one stock number across shop and site, and repeat buyers you can reach without paying for every click.

Problems We Fix

Where fashion businesses lose margin online, and the fix

These are the costs that turn a good sales month into a poor profit month.

Size returns

A size guide built from your own garment measurements, with "fits like" notes and model height, means fewer exchanges than a generic S-M-L chart.

COD orders that come back

RTO costs you forward and return shipping plus blocked stock. COD confirmation on WhatsApp, COD limits by pincode and a prepaid discount cut fake and impulse orders.

Shop and site stock out of sync

When the boutique sells the last piece, the website should know in seconds. POS and online stock sync at SKU level stops overselling.

Instagram orders lost in DMs

Product tags, a catalogue on WhatsApp and checkout links send buyers from a reel to a paid order instead of a long chat about price and size.

Marketplace fees on every sale

Commissions, fixed fees and return charges on marketplaces add up. A D2C store lets repeat buyers order direct, so you keep that margin.

No way to reach past buyers

Your store keeps customer, size and purchase history, so a new festive drop goes to people who bought from you before, by WhatsApp, email or app alert.

Choose Your Platform

Marketplace only, Shopify store or custom store and app?

Most brands use more than one channel. The question is where your own customers should land.

Ranges depend on scope. Compare platforms in Shopify vs WooCommerce, or see our Shopify development service.

Example: an ethnic wear label in Navi Mumbai going D2C

Say you run an ethnic wear label with a boutique in Vashi, 300 styles in 5 sizes each, and most online sales on a marketplace and Instagram. Out of every 100 COD orders, a good number come back, and every return costs you shipping both ways. All numbers here are only an example.

A buyer in Indore sees your reel of a new kurta set, taps the product tag and lands on your store. The size guide tells her the M fits bust 36-38 inches and that the style runs slightly loose. She picks M. At checkout, she sees COD is available for her pincode but prepaid saves her Rs 50 and gets it a day sooner. She pays by UPI.

In the admin panel, stock for that style in M drops from 3 to 2, and the boutique's POS shows the same 2. A Shiprocket label is printed and the courier picks up the parcel the same evening. Another buyer chooses COD for a Rs 4,800 lehenga. Your rules flag it as a high-value COD order, so a WhatsApp message asks her to confirm. She does not reply in 24 hours, so the order is held, and you save a likely RTO.

Two months later, you launch a Diwali drop. Instead of only boosting posts, you send it to past buyers in their saved sizes by WhatsApp and app alert. Repeat buyers order direct, so you pay no marketplace commission on those orders, and you know who bought what for the next season.

How We Build It

How Infoways builds your fashion store and app

  1. 01

    Catalogue and channel review

We look at your styles, sizes, SKU codes, stores and the channels you sell on, and decide Shopify, WooCommerce or custom with you.

  2. 02

    Size and product data

We set up a size chart per fit, fabric and care fields, and a clean SKU structure so stock syncs correctly with your POS.

  3. 03

    Design that sells clothes

Large images, zoom, colour swatches, video, and fast mobile pages. Your brand look, not a template thousands of stores use.

  4. 04

Build checkout, COD and shipping rules

Payment gateway, COD limits, pincode checks, shipping labels and the return and exchange flow are built and tested with real orders.

  5. 05

Test on real phones and real parcels

We place test orders on low-end Android phones and slow networks, ship test parcels and process a return end to end.

  6. 06

Launch, app store release and marketing

The store goes live, the app goes to Play Store and App Store if you need one, and we can run ecommerce SEO, Instagram and Google Shopping campaigns.

Cost and timeline for a fashion ecommerce store

A brand website with collections and an enquiry form, without online checkout, typically costs Rs 1-4 lakh. A Shopify or WooCommerce store with a custom theme, size guides, COD rules and courier integration costs less than a custom build and can go live in a few weeks. A custom ecommerce store with catalogue, cart, payments, orders and your own return and stock logic is typically Rs 6-15 lakh. A shopping app on top of it, with accounts, loyalty and alerts, is a mid-complexity build at Rs 4-12 lakh. GST is extra, and yearly upkeep is usually 15-25% of the build cost.

Cost goes up with the number of stores whose stock must sync, custom loyalty or store-credit rules, multiple warehouses, and B2B wholesale pricing on the same site. It comes down if your product photos and SKU codes are ready and you start on Shopify. Product photography and content are often the slowest part, so plan them early. Mistakes fashion brands make online, and when not to build an app

The first mistake is copying a generic size chart. Every pattern fits differently, and buyers know it. Measure your own garments and add a line on how each style fits. It costs a few days and saves months of exchanges. The second is offering COD to everyone with no checks. COD is still how many Indian buyers prefer to pay, so do not switch it off, but confirm high-value COD orders and give a small reason to prepay.

Third, do not leave marketplaces overnight. They bring buyers who would never find you. Use them for discovery and push repeat buyers to your own store with inserts in the parcel and WhatsApp follow-ups. Fourth, legal basics matter: product pages should carry the declarations required for packaged goods sold online, such as MRP, the seller's details and country of origin, along with a clear return and refund policy. Check the exact list with your CA or legal adviser.

If your sales are mostly one-time gifting buyers or you have under a hundred styles, you probably do not need an app yet. A fast mobile store, a WhatsApp catalogue and strong Instagram content will do more for you. Build the app when you have repeat buyers who would actually install it.

Fashion ecommerce questions

Should a clothing brand use Shopify or a custom store?

Shopify suits most brands starting D2C with up to a few thousand SKUs. A custom store makes sense when you have several stores to sync, unusual return or loyalty rules, or wholesale and retail on one site.

How do you reduce RTO on COD orders?

By confirming COD orders on WhatsApp, setting COD limits by order value and pincode, blocking repeat refusers, and offering a small prepaid discount. Each rule is set by you in the admin panel.

Can the size guide be different for each style?

Yes. Each style can link to its own size chart with garment measurements and fit notes, so a slim kurta and a loose anarkali show different guidance.

Can my boutique and website share stock?

Yes. We connect your store POS or inventory tool so stock is counted once per SKU, and a sale in the shop updates the website within moments.

Can customers exchange size instead of returning?

Yes. The exchange flow lets a buyer pick a new size, books a reverse pickup and reserves the new size, so you keep the sale instead of refunding it.

Can we sell on Instagram and WhatsApp from the same catalogue?

Yes. Your store catalogue syncs to Instagram and Facebook shops and to a WhatsApp catalogue, so prices and stock stay the same everywhere.

How is GST handled on clothing?

GST on apparel depends on the price slab of the item, so the store applies the right rate per product using its HSN code and price. Your CA should confirm the current rates and your invoice format.

Do we still need marketplaces?

Usually yes, for discovery. Your own store is where repeat buyers come back without a marketplace commission. We help you run both without double-selling stock.

Do you help with product photos and content?

We write product descriptions, size and care content and SEO copy. For photography, we can brief your photographer on the angles and sizes the store needs.
