YouTube SEO for Business: How to Rank Your Videos on YouTube and Google

YouTube decides what to show from the words around your video and from how viewers respond to it. Get both right, put the video on a page of your own site, and your videos can work in YouTube search and in Google.

Picture a dentist in Vashi who wants to send a nervous patient one of her own explainers. She types "root canal treatment Vashi" into YouTube to find the link. The first result is a two-minute video from a clinic a few kilometres away. Her clinic filmed six careful explainers last year, and they sit on the channel with titles like "Video 3" and "Clinic Shoot Part 2", no descriptions and no captions.

I am Amol Bonde, and I run Infoways, a web, app, SEO and AI company in Mahape, Navi Mumbai. We set up and manage YouTube channels for businesses, and when we review a client's channel the problem is rarely the video itself. It is usually the title, the description, the missing captions, or a video that lives only on YouTube and nowhere on the company's website. Everything below about how YouTube and Google work is taken from their own help pages, linked as I go.

How does YouTube decide which videos to show?

For search, YouTube names four main elements: relevance, engagement, quality and personalisation. Relevance is how well your title, tags, description and video content match the search. Engagement includes watch time for that query, and quality is about which channels show expertise and trustworthiness on the topic.

That comes from YouTube's help page on how YouTube search works. The same page says personalisation can draw on a viewer's search and watch history, so two people typing the same words may see different results, and that YouTube does not accept payment for better placement in organic search. Ads are a separate, paid placement.

Recommendations, the videos on the home page and in the "up next" list, work a little differently. YouTube's recommendations explainer says they use viewing behaviour, likes, dislikes, subscriptions and feedback, including satisfaction surveys. In plain words, YouTube keeps showing videos that people watch and feel good about having watched.

How do I find the keywords my customers type into YouTube?

Start with what customers already type: YouTube's search suggestions, Google's suggestions, the questions in your comments and enquiries, and the search reports inside YouTube Studio. Pick one main phrase per video and build the title and description around it.

Type the start of a customer question into the YouTube search box, such as "root canal", and note the suggestions. Do the same on Google. The questions customers ask your staff on calls and WhatsApp ("does a root canal hurt?") often make better topics than any tool.

Once you have a few videos up, YouTube shows you real data. The Reach tab in YouTube Studio has a Traffic source: YouTube Search card that lists the terms viewers searched when they found you. As of October 2026, YouTube's help also describes a Trends tab with top searches from your audience over the last 28 days, and it flags content gaps, which YouTube defines as searches where viewers cannot find enough good results. A content gap in your trade is a good video to make next.

If your website is in Google Search Console, its Performance report shows the queries that bring people to your site. Questions that already bring you website visitors are often worth a video too. Our guide to keyword research covers that side in more detail.

How should I write a YouTube title and description for SEO?

Put the customer's main phrase early in the title, in words they would use, and keep the promise honest. In the description, use the first few lines to say what the video covers, repeat the main phrase naturally, and give each video its own description.

YouTube's own tips for video descriptions suggest picking one or two main words that describe the video and featuring them in both the title and description, and say each video should have a unique description because that makes it easier to find through search. Descriptions can run to 5,000 characters, and viewers see only the first few lines until they tap for more.

A description that works for a business usually has three parts. The opening lines say what the video covers and who it helps. The middle adds detail, the chapters and links to the relevant page of your website. The end carries contact details, the address or service area, and links to related videos.

Clickbait is risky in a specific way. YouTube's spam and deceptive practices policy prohibits maliciously misleading titles, thumbnails and descriptions that trick people into clicking a video that does not deliver what it promised. Even when a title stays inside the rules, viewers who leave early because they did not get what the title promised are not the engagement you want.

How do I add chapters and timestamps to a YouTube video?

Type a list of timestamps with labels in the description. The first must be 00:00, you need at least three in ascending order, and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.

Those rules are from YouTube's help page on chapters, which also says manual chapters override the automatic ones YouTube may create, and that not every video is eligible for automatic chapters. Chapters let a viewer jump to "pricing" or "installation" on a long demo. Label them in the words a customer would search, because Google reads them too, as covered further down.

Do YouTube tags still matter?

Barely. YouTube says tags play a minimal role in discovery and are mainly useful when your topic is commonly misspelled. The title, thumbnail and description matter more.

That is the wording on YouTube's help page about tags. The same page warns that adding excessive tags to a video description is against its policies on spam, deceptive practices and scams. For an Indian business, misspellings are a fair use: brand names, product names and transliterated words get spelt many ways (biryani, biriyani; Kharghar, Khargar). Add a few such variants as tags and stop there.

What makes a good YouTube thumbnail for a business video?

A good business thumbnail shows the subject clearly at phone size, uses a few large words at most, and matches what the video delivers. Upload a custom one; the frame YouTube picks for you is often a blur or a half-closed eye.

YouTube's thumbnail help page says custom thumbnails need a verified account, should be 16:9 for regular videos with a minimum width of 640 pixels, and can be JPG or PNG, with a 2 MB limit when uploading from mobile and 50 MB from a computer. In the channels we set up, the thumbnails that get picked show a real product, a finished job or a person's face, readable at phone size.

Should business videos have captions in Hindi and English?

Yes, add captions, and check them. YouTube creates automatic captions in Hindi and English, but its own help page says to always review them and edit parts that were transcribed wrongly.

YouTube's automatic captions page lists Hindi among supported languages. It also says captions may not be created when sound quality is poor, when there is a long silence at the start, or when overlapping speakers or more than one language are heard at the same time. That last point matters for Mumbai businesses, where a lot of videos are in Hinglish. If your video mixes languages, expect to correct the captions or upload your own.

Titles and descriptions can be translated too. YouTube says translated titles and descriptions can appear in YouTube search for viewers who speak those languages. A Pune clinic that speaks in Marathi on camera can add an English title and description, and the reverse works for an English video aimed at Hindi-speaking viewers.

For faceless explainers, the narration is the content. If you go that route, a clear voice track makes captions more accurate and the video easier to follow. Our AI voiceover, music and sound effects service handles narration in Indian languages.

Do playlists, end screens and cards help YouTube SEO?

They help viewers move from one of your videos to the next, which keeps them on your channel. YouTube's help pages describe them as viewer tools and make no direct ranking claims, so treat them as a way to guide viewers.

  • Playlists: group videos by what a customer wants, such as "Treatments explained" or "Before your first visit", and order them so each leads to the next.
  • End screens: can appear in the last 5 to 20 seconds of a video at least 25 seconds long, with up to four elements on a 16:9 video. Links to outside websites need YouTube Partner Program membership.
  • Cards: up to 5 per video, pointing to a video, playlist, channel or (for Partner Program channels) a link. Use one where the video mentions something you explain elsewhere.
  • End screens and cards are not shown on videos set as made for kids.

Why does watch time matter more than views?

Because YouTube names watch time for a query among its search signals, and its recommendations lean on viewing behaviour and viewer satisfaction. A video that people watch through tells YouTube it answered the search. A video people leave in ten seconds tells it the opposite.

This is where most business videos lose. They open with a logo animation, a long greeting and "before we start, please subscribe". Customers searching "how long does a root canal take" want the answer. Show the result or state the answer in the first few seconds, then explain. Check the audience retention graph in YouTube Studio for each video: a steep drop at the start usually means the opening does not match the title.

How do I rank YouTube videos for "near me" and city searches?

Use the place names your customers type, in the title or description where they fit, and say the area in the video itself. If you serve Navi Mumbai, "Vashi" or "Kharghar" in the description helps the video match searches that include those names.

Relevance on YouTube is about how well your title, description and video content match the words in a search. YouTube's help pages do not say how it handles location, so I would not count on it guessing where you work. State it. A Pune physiotherapy centre might title a video "Knee Pain Exercises After Surgery | Physiotherapy in Kothrud, Pune" and say the clinic's area in the closing lines.

For "near me" searches, Google Maps and your Google Business Profile usually do more of the work, and your videos can support them. Add your best videos to your website and link your channel from your profile. Our guides on Google Business Profile and local SEO in Navi Mumbai cover that side.

Google already finds many YouTube videos on its own. To get your videos shown for your business, put each important video on its own page of your website, where the video is the main thing on the page, and give Google a thumbnail, structured data and text around it.

Google Search Central's video best practices set out the rules. The page that holds a video must be a watch page, meaning its main purpose is to show one video. A blog post with an embedded video, or a product page with a video beside the photos, does not count as a watch page for video results, though it can still show as a normal result. Google also says the watch page has to perform well in Search before its video is considered for indexing, and that an indexed page does not guarantee an indexed video.

ItemWhat Google asks forWhat to do
Watch pageA page whose main purpose is one videoOne page per key video, with the video near the top and a written summary below
ThumbnailBMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG or AVIF, at least 60x30 pixels (larger preferred), crawlable by GooglebotUse the same clear thumbnail as on YouTube, at full size
VideoObject structured dataUnique name, description and thumbnailUrl per video; embedUrl or contentUrlAdd JSON-LD on each watch page, matching what is visible
Key momentsClip markup with start and end times, SeekToAction, or timestamps in the YouTube descriptionFor YouTube embeds, the chapters in your description do this
Video sitemapWatch page URL in loc, with player or file URL and thumbnailOptional but useful when you have many videos

Source: Google Search Central, video SEO best practices. Google does not guarantee that markup produces any video feature.

Key moments are the jump-to-section links Google can show under a video result. Google says that for YouTube videos you can set them with timestamps and labels in the YouTube description, which is the same work as chapters. For videos hosted on your own server, Clip or SeekToAction markup does the job.

Once the pages are live, the video indexing report in Search Console shows which videos Google could index and why others failed. The common reasons it lists include "video isn't on a watch page", no thumbnail, and a player that is not present when the page loads, which is what happens when a video sits in a tab or slider that loads later.

Can videos help my business appear in AI search answers?

They can support it, as long as the useful information also exists as text. Google says there are no special requirements or special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode, beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet, and it advises keeping important content in text form.

Google's guidance on AI features in Search also says to make sure structured data matches the visible text and to support text with good images and videos where they help. Other AI tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity do not publish equivalent rules for businesses, so I would not promise anyone a citation. What I can say from practice is that a watch page with a clear written answer, a transcript and your business details gives any of these tools something to read, while a video alone gives them very little.

So write the answer down near the top of the watch page. We wrote more on this in how Google AI Overviews affect Mumbai businesses.

Which YouTube SEO tricks should a business avoid?

Skip tag stuffing, keyword-stuffed descriptions, misleading thumbnails and, above all, bought views or subscribers. The first two do little, and the last two break YouTube's policies.

Common YouTube SEO myths
MythWhat YouTube or Google saysDo this instead
More tags means more reachTags play a minimal role; excessive tags in descriptions break spam policyA few tags for misspellings
Repeat the keyword many times in the descriptionPick one or two main words and feature them in title and descriptionWrite a useful description that uses the phrase naturally
A shocking thumbnail gets clicksMaliciously misleading thumbnails and titles are prohibitedShow what the video delivers
Buying views gets the algorithm goingAnything that artificially increases views, likes or comments is not allowedPromote through your customers, website, WhatsApp and paid YouTube ads

Sources: tags, descriptions, spam policy, fake engagement policy.

Infoways never buys views, subscribers, likes or comments for any channel. YouTube's fake engagement policy does not allow anything that artificially increases views, likes, comments or other metrics, including third-party services that sell them. Content that breaks it gets removed, can lead to strikes, and a channel with three strikes within 90 days may be terminated. Losing the channel means losing every video and comment built up on it, and bought viewers never become customers anyway.

If you want faster reach, pay for it openly with YouTube ads. Our sibling guide on YouTube ads for small businesses explains how that works.

Where this advice breaks down

Good titles and chapters help the right people find a video, but they cannot make a weak video worth watching. If the video does not answer the question, no amount of metadata will hold viewers.

  • Some trades have very little search on YouTube. A specialist B2B supplier may get more from putting videos on its website and sending them to prospects than from YouTube search.
  • YouTube changes its tools often. The Research and Trends tabs, automatic chapters and caption features all shift, so check the help pages linked here before relying on a detail.
  • Personalisation means your own ranking checks are unreliable. Search from a logged-out browser and rely on the YouTube Search traffic report over what you see on your phone.
  • Google does not guarantee video results even when every rule is followed. Treat watch pages as good pages for customers first.

Frequently asked questions

What is YouTube SEO?

YouTube SEO is the work of helping YouTube match your videos to the searches your customers make. It covers choosing the words people type, writing titles and descriptions around them, adding chapters, captions and a clear thumbnail, and making videos that people watch through. YouTube says its search weighs relevance, engagement, quality and personalisation.

How do I rank my YouTube videos higher?

Use the phrase your customers search in the title and first lines of the description, give each video a unique description, add chapters and corrected captions, and upload a clear custom thumbnail. Then make the opening deliver what the title promised, since YouTube counts watch time for a search as an engagement signal. No method guarantees a ranking.

Do tags help YouTube SEO in 2026?

Very little. YouTube's help page says tags play a minimal role in discovery and are mainly useful for topics that are often misspelled, and that the title, thumbnail and description matter more. Adding excessive tags to a description is against YouTube's spam policy. A handful of tags for your brand and spelling variants is enough.

What are the rules for YouTube chapters?

Add timestamps with labels in the video description. The first timestamp must be 00:00, you need at least three in ascending order, and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long. Manual chapters override the automatic ones YouTube may create. Chapter timestamps in the description can also help Google show key moments for the video.

How do I get my YouTube video to show in Google Search?

Put the video on its own page of your website where it is the main content, add a written summary and transcript, a crawlable thumbnail and VideoObject structured data, and keep chapters in the YouTube description for key moments. Then check the Search Console video indexing report. Google does not guarantee that a video will be shown.

Should my business videos be in Hindi or English?

Use the language your customers speak, and caption it. YouTube creates automatic captions in Hindi and English but says to review and correct them, and captions may fail when several languages are spoken at the same time. You can add translated titles and descriptions, which YouTube says can appear in search for viewers of those languages.

Is it safe to buy YouTube views or subscribers?

No. YouTube's fake engagement policy prohibits anything that artificially increases views, likes, comments or other metrics, including third-party services that sell them. Content can be removed, strikes can follow, and a channel with three strikes in 90 days may be terminated. Bought viewers also never become customers. Infoways never buys engagement.

How do I rank YouTube videos for my city?

Say the place names your customers type in the title or description where they fit, and mention the area in the video. Add your service areas to the default description in YouTube Studio. For "near me" searches, your Google Business Profile and website usually do more, so embed key videos on your site and link your channel from your profile.
