Why Isn’t My Website Showing on Google? 9 Reasons

You built a website, but when you search for your business, it’s nowhere to be found. Frustrating — but almost always fixable. Here are the nine most common reasons a website doesn’t show on Google, and what to do about each.

1. Your site is too new

Google takes time to discover and index new websites — from days to weeks. If your site just launched, it may simply not be indexed yet. Submitting it in Google Search Console speeds this up.

2. It’s not indexed

If Google hasn’t indexed your pages, they can’t appear. Check with “site:yourdomain.com”. If nothing shows, set up Search Console, submit your sitemap, and request indexing.

3. You’re accidentally blocking Google

A “noindex” tag or a robots.txt rule can accidentally tell Google not to index your site — a surprisingly common issue, especially after a site launch or redesign. Check these settings; it’s an easy fix once found.

4. Technical problems

Slow loading, broken pages, or a messy structure can stop Google crawling and indexing your site properly. A quick technical check often uncovers the culprit.

5. You’re searching a competitive term

If you’re checking a broad, competitive keyword, you may just be ranking on page 5 rather than not showing at all. Search your exact business name — if that shows you, you are indexed; you simply need SEO to rank for the competitive terms.

6. Thin or duplicate content

Pages with very little unique content, or content copied from elsewhere, may be left out of Google’s index or ranked poorly. Make sure each page has genuine, useful, original content.

7. No SEO foundation

If your site was never built with SEO in mind — no proper titles, structure or keywords — Google may not understand what to rank you for. This is one of the most common reasons businesses stay invisible.

8. A penalty

Rarely, a site is penalised for spammy tactics or hacked content — it can drop out of results. Check Search Console’s “Manual actions” and “Security issues”. If flagged, clean up the issue and request a review.

9. No Google Business Profile (for local)

For local searches, much of your visibility comes from your Google Business Profile, not just your website. If you don’t have one set up, you’ll miss the map results entirely.
