How much does an AI voice agent cost in India? Most platforms charge by the minute of talk time, and the published rates I checked in November 2026 run from about 4 to 31 US cents a minute for the AI part, before Indian telephony, phone numbers, setup and your CRM link are added. Your monthly bill depends far more on how many minutes your calls use than on the headline rate.

Picture a coaching centre above a row of shops near Borivali station. Admissions season is on, the counter phone rings through lunch, and the two people at the desk are also collecting fees and handling parents who walked in. The owner has seen an ad for an AI calling agent that answers every call and calls back every enquiry, and he wants one number: what will it cost me a month?

I am Amol Bonde, and I run Infoways from B-102, Technocity, in Mahape. We build websites, software and AI agents, including voice agents that answer and make calls for Indian businesses. Our own price depends on your call flow, so this article shows how pricing works, what vendors publish and how to work out your own minutes. Every rate below comes from the vendor’s own page, opened on November 2, 2026.

Why do AI voice agent quotes look so different?

Quotes differ because vendors bundle different layers into the number they show you. One quotes the AI only, another includes Indian telephony, a third adds a monthly platform fee and charges setup separately. Three complaints come up often from owners who have collected quotes.

“The per-minute rate looked cheap, then the first bill was much higher.” This usually happens when the rate covered the AI and the telephony was billed separately, or when calls were rounded up to the next pulse. Before you sign, ask for one all-in figure per billed minute that includes the AI, the telephony and any platform fee, and ask how calls are rounded.

“We bought a plan, and in the busy week calls started failing.” Most platforms cap how many calls can run at the same time. Vapi’s base plan allows 4 concurrent calls and Retell gives 20 free, then charges per extra line every month. If your enquiries come in bursts after an ad goes live, ask what your concurrency limit is and what it costs to raise it for a month.

“The agent speaks English well, but our customers want Marathi and Hindi.” Language support depends on the speech models underneath, and better voices can cost more per minute. Retell lists ElevenLabs voices at $0.04 to $0.10 a minute against $0.015 for its standard voices. Test the agent with real customer phrases in each language before you agree a rate, because a cheap voice your customers cannot follow costs you the call.

What are you paying for in an AI voice agent?

You pay for six things, whether a vendor lists them separately or folds them into one rate: the AI conversation (speech-to-text, the language model and text-to-speech), the telephony that carries the call, the phone numbers, the platform or hosting fee, the one-time setup of the call flow and integrations, and capacity such as concurrent calls. The table shows what each one means and the question to ask.

How much do AI voice agent platforms charge per minute?

As of November 2026, the platforms that publish prices charge roughly 4 to 31 US cents per minute for the AI conversation, depending on the plan, the language model and the voice. Several of them price in dollars, so the rupee figure moves with the exchange rate.

Bolna, a voice AI platform that shows rupee equivalents on its page, lists a standard rate of 6.00 cents a minute (shown as about ₹5.52), falling to about 4.5 cents on larger top-ups. Its pilot plans are $300 for 6,500 minutes or $500 for 12,000 minutes, billed in 30-second pulses with up to 25 concurrent calls. Speech-to-text, the language model and text-to-speech are included when you use its bundled models. Its FAQ also says telephony and a platform fee are added per minute, without giving the amounts, so ask for them.

Retell AI breaks the rate into parts: $0.055 a minute for its voice engine, a language model charge that ranges from $0.008 to $0.16 a minute depending on the model, $0.015 for most voices, and $0.015 for telephony in the countries it lists. It puts the total at $0.07 to $0.31 a minute and says there are no minimums. Vapi charges $0.05 a minute for hosting and passes through the speech and model providers at cost; its own example for 1,000 minutes a month comes to $82 to $129.

What does telephony and a phone number cost in India?

Indian telephony is cheap per minute compared with the AI layer, but it comes with paperwork. Plivo, for example, lists domestic calls in India at ₹0.38 a minute in both directions, in 30-second pulses, and an Indian number at ₹200 a month, as of November 2026.

The Plivo India price list includes audio streaming, which is what a voice agent uses to hear and speak on the call, at no extra charge. It also lists add-ons such as transcription at ₹0.81 a minute. Twilio’s India page quotes $0.0496 a minute for outbound calls to Indian mobiles and $0.0699 to local and major-city lines, and does not list a price for an Indian number.

The paperwork matters more than the rate. Plivo’s India calling guide says only businesses registered in India can rent Indian numbers and make domestic calls, KYC is required before you rent a number, both legs of the call must stay in India, and the caller ID must be an Indian number rented from them. Routing calls internationally can mean a foreign caller ID, which many Indian customers ignore. Ask any vendor how your calls reach Indian numbers and whose name the KYC is in.

Does it cost more for Hindi, Marathi or other Indian languages?

It can. Language support comes from the speech-to-text and text-to-speech models, and models trained for Indian languages or premium voices may carry a different per-minute or per-character price. Most bundled platform rates do not change by language, but the voice you choose can.

If your vendor builds on separate speech models, look at what those cost. Sarvam, an Indian AI company, lists speech-to-text at ₹29.40 an hour and its Bulbul V3 text-to-speech at ₹30 per 10,000 characters on pay-as-you-go, as of November 2026. Its text-to-speech API accepts 11 Indian language codes, including Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and Indian English. These are component costs that a vendor pays and passes on, not what you would pay for a finished agent.

From what we see when scoping voice agents, the bigger language cost is setup time. Customers in Mumbai switch between Hindi, Marathi and English in one sentence, and they say numbers, dates and area names in ways a script written in English does not expect. Getting that right takes rounds of test calls, which shows up in the setup fee.

How do I estimate my monthly AI calling minutes?

Multiply your calls per month by the average billed length of a call. Billed length is the real talk time rounded up to the vendor’s pulse, and for outbound calling you add the retries. Here is the method with sample numbers, which you should replace with your own.

  1. Count your calls. Say the Borivali coaching centre gets 60 calls a day, six days a week. That is about 60 × 26 = 1,560 calls a month.
  2. Find the average talk time. Suppose the call log shows 2 minutes 10 seconds on average.
  3. Round up to the pulse. With 30-second pulses, a 2 minute 10 second call is billed as 2 minutes 30 seconds, or 2.5 minutes. Use the rounded figure.
  4. Multiply. 1,560 calls × 2.5 minutes = 3,900 billed minutes a month.
  5. Add outbound retries. If the agent also calls back enquiries and has to try some numbers twice, add those attempts, and ask the vendor whether unanswered or voicemail calls are billed.
  6. Add a buffer for busy months. Admissions season, festival sales or a new ad campaign can double a normal month.

Now apply the published rates to those 3,900 minutes. At Bolna’s standard 6 cents, the AI part is about $234 a month, before its telephony and platform fee. At Retell’s range of $0.07 to $0.31, the same minutes come to about $273 to $1,209. Indian telephony at Plivo’s ₹0.38 a minute adds about ₹1,482, plus ₹200 for each number. Those are usage costs only. Setup, integration and support are separate, and they vary most from one vendor to the next.

Two numbers move this estimate most. Average call length matters because a script that asks one unnecessary question adds seconds to every call. Pulse size matters because many short calls lose more to rounding than a few long ones do. A tight call flow is the cheapest cost saving you have.

What rules affect the cost of outbound AI calls in India?

Outbound calling has rules that change how many of your calls connect. TRAI’s framework puts promotional calls on 140-series numbers, which people can block through the Do Not Disturb registry, and Indian telephony providers require consent before commercial calls. A list of cold numbers will cost you minutes and connect poorly.

According to SCC Times’ report on TRAI’s press note of 10 July 2026, the 140 series is for promotional calls by businesses in every sector, which must register with telecom providers. The 1600 series is reserved for service and transactional calls by banks, insurers and other entities regulated by RBI, SEBI, IRDAI and PFRDA, and for government communication. Customers can block 140-series promotional calls by sector through the DND registry. Plivo’s India guide adds that cold calling is prohibited and calls without explicit digital consent are treated as unsolicited commercial communication.

Calling back someone who filled your enquiry form and asked for a call works well for a voice agent. Calling a bought list with an offer burns minutes on blocked and unanswered calls.

Is an AI voice agent cheaper than a telecaller?

It depends on your call volume and the kind of call. For repetitive calls in high volume, such as enquiry callbacks, appointment reminders and payment follow-ups, an AI agent’s cost tracks the minutes used. A telecaller costs the same in a quiet week as in a busy one, and can handle the calls that need judgement.

Compare the two on the same drivers rather than on salary against a per-minute rate. On the staff side, count salary and statutory contributions, the seat and phone line, training time, hours covered (most telecallers work one shift, six days), leave, and how often you replace and retrain people. On the AI side, count the billed minutes from your estimate, telephony, numbers, platform fees, setup and the staff time to review calls and update the script. Most businesses I talk to end up with the agent on first contact and after-hours calls, and a person on the calls it hands over.

Where this breaks down

The method above gives you a usage estimate, and usage is only part of what a voice agent costs you. Several things it does not capture:

  • Vendor prices change often, and many are in dollars. The rates here are as of November 2, 2026; check the live pricing page before you plan around them.
  • Some vendors do not publish rates at all. Exotel and the platform fees on Bolna’s page are examples, so you will need a written quote to compare.
  • Setup and integration usually cost more than a few months of minutes, and they vary the most between vendors. A cheap per-minute rate with a weak call flow costs more in lost customers than it saves.
  • An AI agent will get some calls wrong, especially with mixed languages, poor network or angry callers. Budget for someone to review calls every week, and for a clear handover to a person.
  • If your call volume is small, say a few calls a day, a missed-call alert and a WhatsApp auto-reply may solve the problem at a fraction of the effort.

Your AI voice agent cost checklist

The cheapest voice agent is the one whose script is short and whose calls go to people who asked to hear from you, so spend your first hour on the call flow and your second on the price.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an AI voice agent cost per minute in India?

As of November 2026, published AI rates range from about 4 cents a minute on Bolna’s pilot plans to $0.31 at the top of Retell AI’s range, with Bolna’s standard rate at 6 cents (shown as about ₹5.52). Indian telephony, such as Plivo’s ₹0.38 a minute, number rental and any platform fee may be extra, so ask for an all-in rate per billed minute.

What is the monthly cost of an AI calling agent for a small business?

It depends on billed minutes. Multiply your monthly calls by the average call length, rounded up to the vendor’s pulse, then add outbound retries. For example, 1,560 calls averaging 2.5 billed minutes is 3,900 minutes. Apply the all-in per-minute rate, then add number rental, platform fees and support. Setup is usually a separate one-time cost.

What is a 30-second pulse in AI call pricing?

A pulse is the unit a call is billed in. With 30-second pulses, every call is rounded up to the next half minute, so a 65-second call is billed as 90 seconds. Bolna’s pilot plans and Plivo’s India calling both use 30-second pulses. Many short calls lose more to rounding than a few long calls do, so check the pulse in every quote.

Do I need an Indian phone number for an AI voice agent?

For calls to Indian customers, an Indian number is usually the better choice, because a foreign caller ID tends to go unanswered. Plivo says only India-registered businesses can rent Indian numbers and make domestic calls, after KYC, and that the caller ID must be one of its Indian numbers. Plivo lists a domestic number at ₹200 a month as of November 2026.

Can an AI voice agent make promotional calls in India?

Promotional calls must follow TRAI’s framework. As reported on TRAI’s July 2026 press note, promotional calls go out on 140-series numbers by registered businesses, and people can block them through the DND registry. Telephony providers such as Plivo also require explicit consent before commercial calls. Calling back people who asked for a call is the safer use.

Does an AI voice agent cost more for Hindi or Marathi?

Sometimes. Language support comes from the speech models, and premium voices can cost more. Retell lists most voices at $0.015 a minute and ElevenLabs voices at $0.04 to $0.10. Indian speech models such as Sarvam’s support 11 Indian language codes, including Hindi and Marathi. The larger cost is often setup time spent testing mixed-language conversations.

Is an AI voice agent cheaper than hiring a telecaller?

For repetitive, high-volume calls like enquiry callbacks and reminders, it often can be, because you pay for minutes used rather than a fixed salary. Compare both on the same drivers: salary and contributions, seat, training, hours covered and replacement on one side, and billed minutes, telephony, fees, setup and review time on the other. Many businesses use both.

What questions should I ask an AI voice agent vendor about pricing?

Ask for an all-in rate per billed minute, the pulse size, whether telephony and platform fees are included, number rental and who completes KYC, your concurrency limit, which voices and languages the rate covers, whether unanswered calls are billed, and exactly what setup and monthly support include. Get the answers in writing so you can compare vendors fairly.
